Methods of Preventive Dentistry
Pit and fissure sealants
The chewing surfaces of teeth are never flat, but have certain depressions and grooves called Pits and Fissures, which serve as potential traps for food and bacteria making the teeth susceptible to decay. Sealants are thus applied to prevent decay as they prevent penetration of fermentable sugars and the bacteria cannot produce acid that causes tooth decay.
Fluoride application
Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a soft brush. The varnish sets quickly, has a pleasant taste and a fruity smell. Use of Fluoride has been proved to prevent decay.
Fluoride releasing fillings
Use of Restorative materials that release fluoride has been noted to effectively inhibit the demineralization of tooth structure and secondary caries.
